The Many Lovers of Miss Jane Austen

The Prime Of Miss Jane Austen

The Prime Of Miss Jane Austen

To mark the 200th anniversary of the publication of Jane Austen's first novel, Sense And Sensibility, Professor Amanda Vickery, one of the leading chroniclers of Georgian England, explores the ebb and flow of Austen's popularity and the hold her fiction has on people today.
In this 60-minute programme, Vickery considers what it is about Austen's plots and characters that continue to delight, amuse, console and provoke. Her fans insist her current popularity is due to the timelessness of the fictional world Austen created, but for Vickery the question is: why have her novels gone in and out of fashion? What interests Amanda is how different periods and generations have looked for their own reflection in the characters and plots of the novels. She wants to work out what that says about them, as well as about Austen.
Interviewing a variety of literary scholars, film directors and costumed devotees who attend the Austen conventions, Vickery also views the Sotherby's sale of an incredibly rare, handwritten manuscript of an unfinished Austen novel.

The Real Jane Austen (2002)

The best documentary about the life of Jane Austen! Narrated by actor and great-grand-niece Anna Chancellor this is a lovely look at the short but fairly happy life of The Authoress. There are lovely scenes of Steventon and other places where she lived and wrote about. Actors play some historic characters mixed with much archive footage of film adaptations.

Summary: Through readings and dramatic reconstructions, The Real Jane Austen pieces together the reality of Austen's existence: her modest upbringing in Hampshire as one of seven children of a clergyman; her disappointment in love; and the family's poverty following the death of her father.

Lost In Austen (2008)

Lost in Austen
A modern girl goes into the world of Pride & Prejudice! Some of the humor is a bit vulgar and she basically makes a mess of the story. But there are some nicely cast actors and beautiful scenery!

Summary: Amanda Price is dissatisfied with her life in modern London. Her favorite escape is getting lost in the pages of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. One night, Amanda is startled to come face to face with the novel's protagonist, Elizabeth Bennet. A small door in her apartment mysteriously links their worlds. Eventually, Amanda becomes trapped on the other side, while Elizabeth remains in the modern world. Now as the events of her favorite book unfold in all the wrong ways, Amanda tries desperately to set things straight, but inevitably makes things worse. Will this fractured version of a classic tale lead Amanda to her own happily-ever-after?

Quotes:
  • Amanda Price: I'm not hung up about Darcy. I do not sit at home with the pause button on Colin Firth in clingy pants, okay? I love the love story. I love Elizabeth. I love the manners and language and the courtesy. It's become part of who I am and what I want. I'm saying that I have standards.
  • Mr. Bingley: [after Amanda sings 'Downtown'] Brava, Miss Price! And whenever life is gettin' me down, I shall be sure to go 'downtown'. Eh, Darcy?
    Mr. Darcy: With alacrity.
  • Amanda Price: [to Darcy] You're supposed to be so bloody incandescent with integrity and you misjudge everybody! You misjudge me!
  • Amanda Price: Hear that sound, George? Duh-uh-uh-uh! That's Jane Austen spinning in her grave like a cat in a tumble-dryer.
  • Elizabeth Bennet: Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley? I am your wife.
Mr. Darcy: I do not recall marrying you, Madam. I think I would have noticed if I had.
Elizabeth Bennet: We have been married nearly 200 years.
